Article: Achieving A Happier Family - Part 2!
As we shared in the previous issue, "Problem solving is an important
skill that parents need to teach their children. And cognitive thinking is
the best thinking (highest level) that a person can possess.
With these
qualities, a child will be able to pass through most hurdles of life toward
success.
This cannot be had unless the parent is a cognitive thinker them
self."
Where is the focus of parenting advice and early childhood
development resources available today? It is
a focus on providing them
with learning experiences - surrounding the child with basic vehicles
for
learning. The learning of basic colors, animals, the symbols of
communication (the alphabet) and all
else a parent feels they need in
order to provide for the child with a nurturing environment for their
cognitive growth.
The reality is that the most important cognitive
need of your child is not addressed solely by these
accoutrements. It is
not just information and data that we need to transmit to our children. The
child
needs also to learn how to handle the information they are
receiving from their surroundings. From infancy through their school years,
the main issue most children have to deal with is how to process the
information they are exposed to from their environments. Later in school, it
isn't the lack of knowing the alphabet that will hinder them but the gross
lack of proper thinking patterns that will handicap their learning through
all of life!
The sad fact is that most children, having great brain
potential, will suffer the greatest loss of brain
capacity imaginable,
not from a head injury but, from the greatest crime of all - their parents
did not
provide them with enough learning experiences. To top it all
off, the parent has also failed to teach the
child how to adequately
think and reason concerning the environment. We as parents don't realize
that
our children are learning greatly from us. But what is it that they
are learning?
The child's brain is absorbing everything from the
environment. All of its pattern building is had from
the patterns it sees
in the environment. This includes the most important one - how to think and
reason!
But how is it learning this vital lesson? The child can only
learn that from its most trusted source -
the parent. If the parent does
not possess good thinking and reasoning skills (problem solving) then the
child will also show deficiencies in their learning ability. Poor
communities with parents compromised largely of drug abusers, low
educational levels and other disparities not only produce offspring that
suffer from some prenatal abuse but then, also, they are exposed to deficits
in educational opportunity in their environments inclusive of the lack of
good cognitive parental modeling - their most important resource. They do
get parental modeling, but it is flawed, weak or totally corrupt - the child
is compromised! Another generation is damaged when, in fact, they had a
great and full potential for achievement. This is why those children that
make it even with this disparity, are truly great achievers. But these
achievers shouldn't really be outstanding because more and more children
should be achieving the same as a normal process of their lives if only
their parents would care enough to make the difference!
As is and was
true with the parent who once was a child mal-nourished cognitively, so now
their children will lack their only key to achievement and success in life!
What is true is that the parent need only begin to learn the patterns that
they were denied as a child and the process itself will positively impact
their children immediately for the better! So that child development must be
as much "parent development" as it is child development! To the degree that
a parent develops their own self - before, during and after child birth -
will be the degree they contribute to the child's most vital development:
cognitive.
All of the skills and the knowledge you need is available
