Article: Achieving A Happier Family!
What is being happy? From Etymology Online -
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php we get the following origins:
mid-14c., "lucky," from hap "chance, fortune;" sense of "very glad"
first recorded late 14c. Ousted O.E. eadig (from ead "wealth, riches")
and gesælig, which has become silly. O.E. bliðe "happy" survives as
blithe. From Greek to Irish, a great majority of the European words for
"happy" at first meant "lucky." An exception is Welsh, where the word used
first meant "wise." Used in World War II and after as a suffix (e.g.
bomb-happy, flak-happy) expressing "dazed or frazzled from stress." Happy
medium is from 1778. Happy as a clam (1630s) was originally happy as a
clam in the mud at high tide, when it can't be dug up and eaten. Related:
Happier; happiest.
The origins of our expression "happy" holds
the context of our article this month. We find three basic ideas
historically associated with happy: lucky, very glad and wise (dazzled
omitted).
Luck is whatever is happ-ening (ocurring) at any given
moment. If it is good, it is said you have good luck. If it is bad,
then, of course, it is bad luck. It comes from the idea that we are
victims of fate: determined by a supreme being in many traditions or just
naturally (randomly).
The question now to consider is why should we
suffer our family to exist from luck to luck - more bad than good - as
we go through life day by day? Is that a good way to raise up a family?
And as leader of that family, is that all you have to show your children and
spouse? Just the draw of the straw? And what other truth can we
acknowledge now? How can we be happy when bad things happ-en? Happiness
based on luck (just like living by luck alone) is often short-lived,
disappointing and emotionally difficult - some individuals have committed
suicide and have destroyed their own families because of it! We all want
happy families but we must take care that our happiness and theirs is
based on more than whatever is happ-ening at the time!
Then comes
"very glad" - (glad from PIE base *ghlei- "to shine, glitter, glow, be
warm"). What shines, glitters, and glows in nature? Everything that is
healthy, strong and pure! Plants with good care or favorable
environments show shiny leaves, pure mountain streams sparkle and glitter
with pure freshness. Our families grow too! Our children need favorable
environments in which to develop their personas and thinking capacity.
Parents are the only source for a child's developmental environment when
its most important - since childbirth. The home is the most important
environment for a child. It too must be amenable to the development of good
thinking and reasoning skills at any and every age. One must learn how
to create the best home possible for children. The best home is not what
you see on Home & Gardens or HGTV! The best home and remodeling job is a
home with a Parent As Cognitive Mentor Certificate hanging on the wall!
The best home is one that is designed with one purpose only - to give your
children the best resources and support for succeeding at school and in
life. Then they will be glad - and so will you! Doesn't this make you
feel, "Oh, soooo warm?
The third and final origin for happy we want
to expand upon is "wise". Wise has its origins in "the way". It implies
that wisdom is knowing how to do something correctly. It involves thinking
and reasoning toward proper solutions. Problem solving is an important
skill that parents need to teach their children. And cognitive thinking
is the best thinking (highest level) that a person can possess. With
these qualities a child will be able to pass through most hurdles of life
toward success. This cannot be had unless the parent is a cognitive
thinker themself. A parent cannot delegate the mental development of his
or her child to the school system or to any daycare. Why? Because no
matter how much you try, you are and will always be, the most important
person to your child.
Be, then, their most important example!
All of these skills and the knowledge you need is available to you by simply
registering for one of our courses. You can become the best parent,
truly. But you need the best resources. These are they!
Visit our
website for more information about our courses and other resources now
available to you.
